Ayodhya Family Trip Planning — 3-Day Pilgrimage Itinerary for Families
Ayodhya is best experienced slowly, not rushed. Families visiting from out of town — particularly those with young children or elderly grandparents — benefit enormously from a spread-out, unhurried itinerary. Rushing a pilgrimage to tick off landmarks defeats the purpose. This 3-day guide is designed for genuine families: comfort, flexibility, and spiritual depth are prioritised over speed.
Day 1 — Arrival, Rest, and Sunset at Saryu Ghat
Travel day. Arrive at Ayodhya Junction or Ayodhya Dham Station. Take an auto-rickshaw to your accommodation (Birla Dharmashala is 2 km from Ayodhya Junction).
Afternoon: Check-in and Rest
Do not attempt a temple visit immediately after a train journey. The heat, the unfamiliar environment, and the darshan queues all add to the stress. Use the afternoon to:
- Check in at Birla Dharmashala
- Freshen up and rest for 1–2 hours
- Share a light meal at one of the local restaurants
Evening: Saryu Ghat and the Aarti
Make the evening aarti at Ram Ki Paidi your first evening’s experience. The ghat is 2–2.5 km from Birla Dharmashala — a short auto ride. Arrive by 6:30 PM for the full experience of lamps floating on the river as the sun sets.
This is also an opportunity to try Ayodhya’s famous kachori-sabzi from street vendors near the ghats for dinner.
Accommodation tip for families: Birla Dharmashala’s AC Deluxe rooms sleep a family of 3 comfortably (1 double bed + 1 child on a roll-out if requested — ask at check-in).
Day 2 — Ram Mandir and Hanuman Garhi
This is your main darshan day. Plan around it.
Morning (6 AM – 12 PM): Ram Mandir
Arrive at Ram Mandir by 6:00 AM. This is the coolest, quietest window. Even if queues build, the early start makes a significant difference.
For families with young children:
- Explain the darshan process before you arrive — queues can be confusing for children
- Keep them dressed modestly but comfortably
- Have small snacks ready for the wait
- Consider whether you want the whole family to queue, or if one adult can hold the place while the others rest outside
For families with elderly members:
- Use the priority lane at security — ID required
- The upper pathways inside the temple are more accessible than the lower courtyard
- Rest in the air-conditioned mandap areas where available
Midday: Lunch and Rest
Ram Mandir typically closes for a 2-hour lunch break (12 PM – 2 PM). Use this time for lunch and rest. Birla Dharmashala is just 500 m away — you can walk back.
Afternoon: Hanuman Garhi
Visit Hanuman Garhi in the afternoon. It is believed that visiting Hanumanji first before Ram Mandir removes obstacles and facilitates a smooth darshan on the main day. The temple sits on a hillock with 76 steps — this is the most physically demanding site on the itinerary.
For families: If some members cannot manage the stairs, they can wait at the base. The experience for those who do climb is well worth it — the sanctum contains a beautiful idol of Sankat Mochan Hanuman with a very peaceful atmosphere.
Evening: Free / Cultural Walk
Use the evening to explore the streets near Civil Lines and the old city. This is also a good time to stock up on sweets and prasad for the return journey.
Day 3 — Kanak Bhawan, Ram Ki Paidi Revisit, and Departure
Morning: Kanak Bhawan
If Day 2 was entirely consumed by Ram Mandir, use Day 3 morning for Kanak Bhawan — the temple of golden Sita-Ram. Located approximately 1–1.5 km from Birla Dharmashala, it is one of the most beloved sites in the city and has a beautiful inner sanctum.
Midday: Final Snan or Ghat Walk
For those who have not yet taken a holy dip in the Saryu, the morning of Day 3 is a good time — fewer crowds, cooler temperatures, and a calmness that is harder to find on festival days.
Afternoon: Check-out and Departure
Check out at Birla Dharmashala by noon. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are available to Ayodhya Junction and Ayodhya Dham Station.
Flexible Alternatives
Not every family wants or needs 3 days. Here are condensed options:
2-Day Minimum: Day 1 arrival + evening aarti; Day 2 Ram Mandir morning + Hanuman Garhi afternoon + departure
Weekend Option (2 days): Arrive Saturday evening, aarti at ghats; Sunday full-day Ram Mandir + Kanak Bhawan; Monday morning departure
Relaxed 4–5 Days: Add a day trip to Treta Ke Thakur and Mani Parbat, or use extra days for rest and spontaneous spiritual moments without any fixed itinerary.
