Ayodhya–Varanasi–Prayagraj Ramayan Pilgrimage Circuit — A Complete Itinerary

Three of the holiest cities in Hinduism — Ayodhya, Varanasi (Kashi), and Prayagraj — lie within a 200 km triangle in eastern Uttar Pradesh. Together they form one of the most powerful pilgrimage circuits in India: the birthplace of Lord Ram, the city of Lord Shiva, and the confluence of the sacred rivers. Undertaking all three in a single yatra is a journey that devotees describe as spiritually complete.

This guide gives you a complete, practical itinerary — with distances, travel times, key sites, and where to stay — so you can plan the circuit with confidence.

Why Combine the Three Cities

Each of these cities represents a different face of Hindu sacred geography:

  • Ayodhya — the birthplace of Lord Ram, the city of bhakti (devotion). The Ram Mandir and the Saryu ghats are the focus.
  • Varanasi (Kashi) — the eternal city of Lord Shiva, the city of moksha (liberation). The Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Ganga aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat are the focus.
  • Prayagraj — the site of the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati. The focus is the sacred bath and the Kumbh Mela grounds.

Undertaken together, they cover the three deepest aspirations of Hindu spiritual life: devotion, liberation, and purification.

Distances and Travel Times

Understanding the geography of the circuit is essential for planning:

RouteDistanceBy RoadBy Train
Ayodhya ↔ Varanasi~200 km4–5 hours4–5 hours (direct trains)
Ayodhya ↔ Prayagraj~160 km3–4 hours3–4 hours (direct trains)
Varanasi ↔ Prayagraj~120 km2.5–3 hours2.5–3 hours (direct trains)

All three cities are connected by Indian Railways, and the roads between them are well-maintained national highways. For the full train route details, see our how to reach Ayodhya guide.

This is the ideal pace for most pilgrims: unhurried, with rest days, and time at each sacred site.

Day 1–3: Ayodhya (2–3 nights)

The city of Ram — the devotional heart of the circuit.

Begin in Ayodhya and set a calm, devotional tone for the entire yatra.

  • Day 1: Arrive, settle into Birla Dharmashala. Evening darshan at Ram Mandir. Saryu Ghat evening aarti.
  • Day 2: Early-morning Mangala Aarti at Ram Mandir (book a pass in advance — see our aarti pass guide). Hanuman Garhi, Kanak Bhawan, Dashrath Mahal.
  • Day 3: Nageshwarnath, Treta Ke Thakur, Mani Parbat. Afternoon rest. Travel to Prayagraj by evening train (3–4 hours).

See our 7 sacred sites of Ayodhya guide for the full temple circuit.

Day 4–5: Prayagraj (1–2 nights)

The Triveni Sangam — purification at the sacred confluence.

  • Day 4: Arrive Prayagraj. Visit the Triveni Sangam for a ritual bath (snan) at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati — one of the most sacred acts in Hinduism. Visit Hanuman Mandir (the lying-down Hanuman idol) and Alopi Devi temple.
  • Day 5: Morning visit to the Anand Bhavan (Nehru family home, optional) and the Akshaya Vat. Afternoon train or road to Varanasi (2.5–3 hours).

Note: If visiting during the Magh Mela (January–February) or Kumbh Mela years, Prayagraj deserves an extra day. Plan accordingly.

Day 6–8: Varanasi (2–3 nights)

Kashi, the eternal city of Shiva — the spiritual climax.

  • Day 6: Arrive Varanasi. Evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat — one of the most spectacular spiritual spectacles in the world.
  • Day 7: Early-morning boat ride on the Ganga at sunrise. Kashi Vishwanath Temple darshan (book online in advance). Walk the ghats. Afternoon visit to Sarnath (where Buddha gave his first sermon) if time permits.
  • Day 8: Final morning darshan. Depart from Varanasi (Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport has good connections to Delhi, Mumbai, and beyond).

Shorter Version — 5 Days (Fast Pace)

If you have only five days, the circuit is still possible but rushed:

  • Day 1–2: Ayodhya (focus on Ram Mandir, Hanuman Garhi, Saryu aarti)
  • Day 3: Prayagraj (Triveni Sangam bath, half day)
  • Day 4–5: Varanasi (Ganga aarti, Kashi Vishwanath, sunrise boat ride)

This pace works but sacrifices depth. We strongly recommend the 8-day version if your schedule allows.

Best Time to Do the Circuit

All three cities share a similar climate, so the timing considerations are the same:

  • Best weather: October to March (10–25°C across the region)
  • Festival highlights:
    • Ram Navami (March) in Ayodhya
    • Dev Deepawali (November) in Varanasi — the ghats lit with millions of lamps
    • Magh Mela (January–February) in Prayagraj
  • Avoid: May–June (extreme heat across all three cities)
  • Monsoon: July–September brings rain and humidity but fewer crowds

Practical Tips for the Circuit

  • Book all trains in advance — this corridor is busy year-round and packed during festivals
  • Carry light luggage — you will be moving between three cities; heavy bags make temple visits difficult
  • Keep a small waterproof bag for wet clothes after the Sangam and Saryu baths
  • Budget roughly ₹15,000–₹25,000 per person for the full 8-day circuit including travel, stay, and food (less if you stay in dharamshalas throughout)
  • Confirm temple timings at each city before arrival — they vary seasonally and on festival days
  • Use the same travel coordinator across all three cities if travelling as a group

The Spiritual Arc of the Circuit

There is a reason this triangle has been travelled by pilgrims for thousands of years. The journey moves through three distinct spiritual experiences — devotion at Ayodhya, purification at Prayagraj, and liberation at Varanasi. Undertaken in sequence, it is considered one of the most complete pilgrimages a Hindu can perform.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many days are needed for the Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj pilgrimage circuit?

A comfortable Ayodhya–Varanasi–Prayagraj circuit needs 7–9 days: 2–3 days in Ayodhya, 2–3 days in Varanasi, and 1–2 days in Prayagraj. It is possible to rush it in 5 days, but this leaves little time for a peaceful darshan at each site.

How far is Ayodhya from Varanasi and Prayagraj?

Ayodhya is approximately 200 km from Varanasi (4–5 hours by road or train) and about 160 km from Prayagraj (3–4 hours by road or train). Varanasi and Prayagraj are about 120 km apart (2.5–3 hours). The three cities form a natural triangle in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

What is the best order to visit Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj?

The most common order is Ayodhya → Prayagraj → Varanasi, following the natural road and rail route south. Some pilgrims start in Varanasi and move north. Logistically, begin wherever your flight or train arrives — Lucknow and Varanasi are the nearest major airports.

What is the best time of year for the Ayodhya–Varanasi–Prayagraj yatra?

October to March is the best time for the entire circuit, with comfortable weather across all three cities. Avoid May and June (extreme heat of 40–45°C) and plan around major festivals like Ram Navami (Ayodhya), Dev Deepawali (Varanasi), and Magh Mela (Prayagraj) if you want to experience them.

Is there a train that connects Ayodhya, Varanasi, and Prayagraj?

Yes. All three cities are well connected by Indian Railways. There are direct trains between Ayodhya and Varanasi, Ayodhya and Prayagraj, and Varanasi and Prayagraj. The Kashi Vande Bharat and several express trains serve this corridor. Book trains in advance, especially during festival season.
