The Legend — Why It Is Called Kanak Bhawan
Kanak means gold, and Bhawan means house or residence. The name tells the story.
According to Ramayana tradition, this palace was originally given to Sita Mata as a personal residence by her mother-in-law Kaikeyi — the same queen whose insistence on sending Ram into exile is a central tragedy of the epic. In the Ramayana, Kaikeyi had her own reasons, but the Ramcharitmanas of Tulsidas reconciles the story, suggesting that the separation ultimately served a divine plan. Whatever the legend, the palace she gave Sita is remembered here as a place of grace, beauty, and dignity.
The original palace is believed to have stood on this exact site. The current temple structure is a reconstruction, but the sanctum’s presiding idols — the beautiful gold-crowned Ram and Sita — are deeply revered and believed to carry the spiritual energy of centuries of devotion.
What You Will See at Kanak Bhawan
The Main Idols
The inner sanctum houses a charan paduka (footprint relief) of Lord Ram alongside the main idols of Sita-Ram, Lakshmana, and Hanuman. The Sita-Ram idols are uniquely crafted — wearing rich, coloured garments and golden crowns, and seated in a posture of warmth and intimacy that reflects the love between the divine couple.
The Courtyard and Architecture
The temple complex includes a large, peaceful courtyard and several smaller shrines dedicated to associated deities. The architecture is simple and devotional rather than grand — the spiritual atmosphere comes from the quality of the space, not from scale.
The Kanak Bhawan Offering
The temple has a special tradition of offering a small portion of bhang (cannabis preparation) as prasad to Lord Ram on auspicious days. Most visitors are not aware of this tradition, and it is considered an internal ritual — visitors are free to participate by simply receiving the standard prasad of charnamrit and sweetmeats.
Darshan Timings
General timings:
- Morning: 6:00 AM – 12:00 PM
- Afternoon: 3:00 PM – 9:00 PM (closed 12–3 PM)
On festival days — particularly Ram Navami, Vivah Panchami, and Diwali — the temple stays open longer. Check locally before planning your visit on these dates.
Best time to visit: Morning or late afternoon. Mornings are quieter; late afternoons offer the golden light on the gilded idols inside the sanctum.
Photography: Photography inside the sanctum is not permitted. You may photograph the courtyard and exterior.
Getting to Kanak Bhawan from Birla Dharmashala
Kanak Bhawan is approximately 1.5–2 km from Birla Dharmashala on Civil Lines. It is a short auto-rickshaw ride of 5–10 minutes (₹15–30). It is also a manageable walk of 20–25 minutes on a flat road if you are staying at Birla Dharmashala and have the time.
