When is Ram Navami 2025?
Ram Navami falls on the Shukla Paksha Navami of the Hindu month of Chaitra (March–April). In 2025, Ram Navami falls on Saturday, 5th April 2025.
The main celebrations in Ayodhya typically begin 2–3 days before and continue through the weekend. The peak day is 5th April.
What Happens During Ram Navami in Ayodhya
The Grand Celebrations at Ram Mandir
On the night of Ram Navami eve (4th April), a grand celebration begins at Ram Mandir — midnight prayers, bhajan sessions, and readings from the Ramcharitmanas. The temple is illuminated, and a large gathering of devotees spends the night in prayer.
On Ram Navami morning, the temple hosts:
- Special abhishek (ritual bathing) of the Ram Lalla idol
- Ram Janmotsav — the ceremony of celebrating the birth
- Processions through the main streets of Ayodhya
- Special aarti at Ram Ki Paidi on the Saryu River
The Procession (Shobha Yatra)
One of the most spectacular elements of Ram Navami in Ayodhya is the Shobha Yatra — a grand procession that winds through the city’s main thoroughfares. The procession features:
- Decorated idols of Lord Ram, Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman
- Traditional music and bhajan parties
- Folk dancers and cultural performances
- Devotees from across India in traditional dress
The yatra typically starts from Ram Mandir and passes through the main streets of the old city. Watching it from a rooftop or secure vantage point is an unforgettable experience.
How Crowded Does It Get?
Very. During Ram Navami 2024 — the first Ram Navami after the consecration — Ayodhya received an estimated 20–25 lakh (2–2.5 million) visitors over the course of the festival. On the peak day alone, footfall at Ram Mandir ran into several lakhs.
What this means practically:
- Darshan queues on Ram Navami can be 4–8 hours long on the peak day
- The road from Ram Mandir to the main ghat areas becomes a sea of humanity
- Local transport slows to a crawl from mid-morning onwards

Plan Your Darshan Approach
Option 1 — Attend the midnight celebration (4th April) Many devotees prefer to join the midnight celebration on Ram Navami eve, take darshan in the very early hours (12 AM–3 AM), and then rest through the morning while the crowds peak.
Option 2 — Early morning darshan (5 AM–8 AM) Those who sleep through the night should aim to reach the temple by 5 AM or earlier on Ram Navami morning. This is the second-best window — queues are still long but manageable, and the atmosphere as the sun rises over Ayodhya is extraordinary.
Option 3 — Skip the peak day If physical comfort is a priority and attending the actual date is not a strict requirement, visiting 2–3 days before or after Ram Navami offers a much calmer experience while the city is still decorated and celebratory.
What to Carry
- Government photo ID (mandatory at security)
- Water bottle (at least 1.5 litres per person — it will be hot)
- Light but modest clothing — cotton is best
- Comfortable footwear that is easy to remove at temple checkpoints
- Powerbank — mobile charging is difficult in dense crowds
- Cash — ATMs near the temple area run out of cash on peak festival days
- A folding stool or walking stick — if you are elderly or cannot stand for long periods

- Large bags or backpacks (security checks are slower)
- Any type of leather item (may be restricted in temple areas)
